A 4-day 3-night Phu Yen summer getaway — waterfalls, wild islands & real fishing villages. Private tours for families & groups who want more than a highlight reel.
Nha Trang has the name recognition. Phan Thiết has the weekend crowd. And if you’ve lived in Ho Chi Minh City long enough, you’ve probably done both, more than once.
Phú Yên is what comes next.
500km from Ho Chi Minh City, this quiet province on the South Central Coast hasn’t been packaged for mass tourism yet. No strip of identical resorts. No jet ski salesmen on the beach. Just a coastline that changes colour with the tide, a fishing community living by rhythms older than any hotel, and adventures that still feel like genuine discoveries.
Here’s what a 4-day 3-night itinerary in Phú Yên looks like when it’s done right, curated by Chôm Chôm Travel.
You arrive in Phú Yên in the morning, by night train or flight, and transfer by car or motorbike to a local village close to the sea. Breakfast is Bánh Xèo: a simple, sizzling rice crepe filled with fresh shrimp and squid, the kind of dish that’s easy to underestimate until it’s in front of you. Enough to feel energised and ready for what’s ahead.
💡Chôm Chôm’s Tips: Phú Yên is reached via Tuy Hòa, either by flight from Ho Chi Minh City (1 hour) or by overnight train (9.5 hours). If you sleep well on the move, the night train is worth it: your own 4-berth cabin, a comfortable bed, and a coastal sunrise rolling past the window by morning. Take the flight on the way back and you’ve got one trip, two entirely different ways to experience Vietnam.
The trail to Vực Phun doesn’t begin with a path. It begins with a dry riverbed, big boulders, and the immediate realisation that this is going to ask something of you.
You step from rock to rock, crouch for balance, climb where the terrain demands it. White butterflies drift through the trees. Ahead, your local guide Tài moves through the rocks carrying a full-sized SUP board on his shoulder, like it’s nothing.
👉 Station 1 is an emerald lake that appears without warning. The guide paddles you across on the SUP.
👉 Station 2 is where you hear the waterfall before you see it.
A short climb, and then Vực Phun. A thundering curtain of white water crashing into a cold, clear pool. You can swim freely, jump from the cliff edge, or let the guide paddle the SUP directly under the cascade until the full force of the waterfall pours over your head. It feels like a waterpark that forgot to charge admission.
🏡 Where you’ll sleep: A boutique homestay built at single-storey height to sit alongside the traditional fishing village houses around it, not above them.
The day starts at 5:30am, if you want it to.
Walk or cycle to the beach in Lò Village, where the wholesale fish market is already in full motion. Fresh tuna in iced buckets, transferred to motorbikes heading across the province. A man on the shoreline, fixing his nets alone, facing the water.
The sun rises slowly. Golden. Fishing boat silhouettes on the horizon. It’s the kind of morning that rewards waking up early.
By speedboat, the first stop is Hòn Yến, a cliff of black basalt columns up to 70 metres high, formed into hexagons by volcanic activity millions of years ago. You pull up close enough to feel small.
Then into the water. Life jacket on, snorkel in hand, a guide pulling the group along a lifebuoy through shallow coral beds — striped fish, bright coral, and blue starfish that caused genuine excitement among the younger travellers.
🌊 Local tip: Between May and August, water levels at Hòn Yến drop and the coral rises close to the surface — visible without diving. Time it around the lunar calendar for the clearest conditions.
Today’s adventure ends at Hòn Chùa, a small island with clear water, hammocks, and a rustic hut where a BBQ seafood lunch is already being prepared. Fresh lobster, crab, grilled squid, “canh chua” – sour soup with fish. Plus grilled fish, caught that same morning by the guide’s friend who’d been spearfishing alongside the boat before departure.
The rest of the afternoon is yours. You can explore the village at your own pace, or stay close to the water.
🏡 Where you’ll sleep: The same boutique homestay from Night 1 – in the heart of the fishing village, just a short walk from the beach.
On the third day, the pace slows and the experience deepens.
A hike up Cong Thien Hill opens into a panoramic view of the ocean, Hòn Yến in the distance, and basket boats moving slowly from the shore toward the island. Then down to the water, and into one of those boats yourself.
Hòn Yến is home to 22 coral species and 60 species of fish. A recent survey found the reef degrading from pollution, unsustainable fishing, and unchecked tourism. In response, UNDP’s Biodiversity Initiative partnered with the local cooperative to launch seven community-based ecotourism tours — and direct 15% of revenue toward coral protection and community-led patrolling.
The basket boat fishermen, who can only fish in winter, now take travellers out during the warmer months. Tourism gives them an income during the season the sea won’t allow fishing.
Ms. Oanh feeds you lunch under her mango tree — seaweed soup, braised pork, shrimp, spring rolls with fish cake. Then shows you how she repairs fishing nets every day, stitching broken holes with a special needle and quick, practiced hands.
Ms. Sen processes bird nests from 29 bird houses into a high-value food supplement. She invites you to try one step of production: picking the feathers by hand. Slower and more meditative than you’d expect.
Ms. Lụa has made fish sauce the same way for four generations — traditional fermentation in wooden barrels. She explains the process. Then pours you a taste.
By the end of the day — rustic, unscripted, unhurried — you’ve sat in three strangers’ homes and felt entirely welcome in all of them.
🏡 Where you’ll sleep: A beach villa right on the sand, infinity pool, and a patio facing directly east. The sunrise here is not something to sleep through.
The final morning is yours.
A private transfer takes you from your accommodation to Tuy Hòa Airport or Tuy Hòa Train Station, whichever suits your onward journey. It’s a quiet, comfortable close to a trip that has been anything but ordinary.
The kind of end that sends you home recharged, and quietly wondering when you can do it again.
April through August is the window for your Phú Yên summer getaway. Clear skies, calm seas, and the coral at Hòn Yến is at its most spectacular from May onward.

Is Phu Yen good for family travel?
Yes. The waterfall hike suits kids comfortable on uneven ground. Snorkeling is guided and fully life-jacketed. The village day has enough hands-on moments for most ages.
When is the best time to see coral at Hòn Yến without diving?
From April to August, your guide will know the best lunar calendar dates for clearest visibility.
What makes Phu Yen different from Nha Trang or Phan Thiet?
Phú Yên hasn’t been built up for mass tourism yet. The beaches are quieter, the experiences more intimate, and the access to local culture far more genuine.
How long should I spend in Phu Yen?
A 4-day 3-night itinerary gives you enough time to cover the waterfall, the islands, and a full community day without rushing any of it.
“We’ve lived in Vietnam for 8 years but have never been to Phú Yên. Chôm Chôm helped me to plan this surprise trip for our kids this summer from A-Z, and they absolutely LOVED it. The girls were still talking about the fun waterfall adventure, snorkeling, and lovely times with the locals.
We really enjoyed our relaxing stays by the peaceful beach, and the local food was excellent. We felt safe, cared for, and learnt a lot from the passionate local guides. Our kids said that this was their best trip ever in Vietnam. Thank you so much!”
Everything above including the dipping sauce, the blue starfish, and the four-generation fish sauce family, comes from being there with people who know this place well.
